{"id":5161,"date":"2016-06-17T08:34:30","date_gmt":"2016-06-17T08:34:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pros.upv.es\/?page_id=5161"},"modified":"2016-12-01T10:06:41","modified_gmt":"2016-12-01T10:06:41","slug":"testar","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pros.webs.upv.es\/site\/testar\/","title":{"rendered":"TESTAR: automated robustness testing at the UI level"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pros.upv.es\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/logo-testar.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2409 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pros.upv.es\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/logo-testar.png\" alt=\"logo-testar\" width=\"198\" height=\"109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pros.webs.upv.es\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/logo-testar.png 198w, https:\/\/pros.webs.upv.es\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/logo-testar-50x28.png 50w, https:\/\/pros.webs.upv.es\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/logo-testar-136x75.png 136w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a>WHAT IS TESTAR?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>TESTAR is a tool that enables the automated system testing of desktop, web and mobile applications at the <em>GUI<\/em> level.<br \/>\nSince 2014, TESTAR has been deployed and used in several companies with impressive results, which show its potential to grow into a full-fledged tool that can help companies improve system testing at the GUI level.<br \/>\nTESTAR is available under the <a href=\"http:\/\/opensource.org\/licenses\/BSD-3-Clause\" target=\"_blank\">BSD3 license<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>TESTAR has been developed within the context of the <a href=\"http:\/\/crest.cs.ucl.ac.uk\/fittest\/\" target=\"_blank\">FITTEST<\/a> (Future Internet Testing) project (EU project no: 257574 FP7 Call 8 ICT-Objective 1.2 Service Architectures and Infrastructures) that run from 2010 till 2013.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HOW DOES IT WORK?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TESTAR automatically executes\u00a0test\u00a0sequences following the steps in the diagram below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-36\" src=\"http:\/\/webtestar.dsic.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/testar_thumb.png\" alt=\"Test protocol\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Basically:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start<\/strong> the System Under Test (SUT), optionally <strong>instrument<\/strong> it (e.g. to obtain internal information necessary to guide the search).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scan<\/strong>\u00a0(or scrape) the GUI in order to obtain the state of all control elements on the screen (type, position, enabled\/disabled, etc.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Generate \u00a0widget tree<\/strong>. This is\u00a0a hierarchical representation that enables TESTAR to derive a set of sensible actions (such as clicks, keystrokes, drag and drop operations,etc.).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Select<\/strong> promising actions (actions that are likely to expose faults) according to TESTAR\u2019s internal search state, and <strong>execute<\/strong>them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Repeat<\/strong>: Tree generation, action derivation, action selection and execution are repeated until the desired sequence length has been reached.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stop<\/strong>: Eventually, depending on the criteria used for the tool\u2019s fitness function, the generated sequence is rated and the SUT stopped.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start again:<\/strong> In the next iteration the tool generates another sequence and repeats sequence generation until.<\/p>\n<p><strong>End<\/strong>: when a certain stopping criterion (e.g. time or a particular number\u00a0of sequences) has been met.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.testar.org\/\"><strong>Read More<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WHAT IS TESTAR?
