Course description and objectives

The processing and management of genomic data is becoming an essential activity in the field of Precision Medicine (PM). In this area, it is essential that the genomic data, which will support the clinical diagnosis, are reliable, correct, and up to date.

This course focuses on ensuring that the student is familiar with the most used sources of genomic data, that he understands the different existing strategies to store information on genomic variations, and that he understands, manages, and skillfully uses advanced methods and tools for processing and classification of genomic variations.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Know what Genomic Data Science is: Fundamentals and importance for the development of precision medicine.
  • Know the process to make a genetic diagnosis based on the identification of the variations present in a patient’s DNA.
  • Know the file format most used for storing information on genomic variations: the VCF file (Variant Call Format).
  • Know the basics of the most used technologies for manipulating VCF files.
  • Manipulate VCF files to identify genetic variations applying the technologies mentioned above.
